Iron Infusions

Restoring your energy safely and effectively

If you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency or anaemia, your doctor may recommend an iron infusion.

While the idea of an intravenous (IV) treatment might sound daunting, it is a straightforward, routine procedure designed to quickly and safely replenish your body’s iron stores.

What is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion is a minor procedure where a liquid iron formulation is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a small needle (IV) placed in your arm or hand. Because the iron bypasses your digestive system, your body can absorb it immediately, allowing for a much faster recovery of your iron levels compared to standard oral supplements.

Why Might You Need an Iron Infusion?

Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout
your body. When your iron levels drop too low, you may experience extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and a rapid heartbeat.

Your doctor might recommend an iron infusion rather than oral supplements for several reasons:
  • Intolerance to Oral Iron – Many patients experience uncomfortable side effects from iron pills, such as severe nausea, cramping, or constipation.
  • Poor Absorption – Certain conditions, such as Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, or a history of gastric bypass surgery, can prevent your gut from absorbing iron efficiently.
  • Severe Iron Deficiency Anaemia– If your iron levels are critically low, an infusion provides a rapid, high-dose correction that pills cannot match.
  • Time-Sensitive Needs – If you are preparing for a major surgery, recovering from significant blood loss, or are in the later stages of pregnancy, an infusion safely speeds up the recovery of your iron stores.
  • Chronic Blood Loss – Conditions like heavy menstrual bleeding or certain gastrointestinal issues can deplete iron faster than oral supplements can replace it.
Depending on your iron levels, you may need more than one infusion. Usually, iron infusions are given at least one week apart.

Why choose Lakeview Private Hospital for your infusion?

Having your procedure in a hospital setting offers unparalleled safety, comfort, and peace of mind:

Unmatched Clinical Safety and Monitoring

Though rare, iron infusions carry a small risk of allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) or changes in blood pressure. In a hospital setting, you are continuously monitored by our highly trained nurses and doctors. If an adverse reaction occurs, a full rapid-response medical team and emergency equipment are available within seconds - a level of safety standalone clinics often cannot provide.

Expert IV Placement

Our hospital nursing staff perform IV insertions multiple times a day. Their high level of expertise means the needle is placed quickly and as painlessly as possible, minimising discomfort and the risk of the iron leaking into surrounding tissues (extravasation), which can cause permanent skin staining.

A Restful, Monitored Environment

Our Cancer Care & Infusion Centre is purpose built and equipped for with specialised infusion bays designed for patient comfort. You can relax in an adjustable clinical recliner while our dedicated nursing staff checks your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature) before, during, and after the infusion.

What to Expect on the Day

  • Arrival & Assessment: A nurse will check your vital signs and review your medical history.
  • The IV Placement: A small needle will be placed in your arm or hand.
  • The Infusion: The iron will be slowly administered over 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the specific type of iron your doctor has prescribed.
  • Observation: After the infusion finishes, you will remain comfortably seated for about 30 minutes so our clinical team can ensure you have had no adverse reactions before you head home.
